The Boston-based Mason & Hamlin company gave New York’s Steinway & Sons considerable competition over the years. Many pianists prefer the Mason & Hamlin for its gorgeous, rich bass tone that makes even the smaller grands sound like concert instruments. You’d have to buy a much larger instrument by any other maker (including Steinway) to get the same depth of bass that this instrument possesses.
