Chickering Baby Grand Piano, Walnut Finish, Conventional 5′ Model, serial number 162206 (1930s approximate year).
Piano Cabinet is 100% original in all aspects and in good overall condition. The piano has no major flaws or defects. The cabinet has some very lite scratches that could be buffed out. The metals, decal, and pedals are all in good condition. One key is missing its ivory touch piece. Piano has an environmental control unit installed (maintains optimal humidity).
Piano interior: The interior is in good condition and shows no signs of structural instability. The pinblock is holding the tuning pins fairly well and the strings sound good. The soundboard is original and in great condition with no cracks in either it or the bridges. A deep cleaning of the interior of the piano to remove the dust should be performed.
Piano Action: The action is in average overall condition. The action could use some regulation work and some cleaning. This work can all be done in the home and would help the action play that much better.
This piano has incredible tone for its age. That being said, several original components are at or nearing end of life and should be replaced at some point. Appraisals have indicated this work could be done incrementally. The “bones” of the piece (soundboard, harp, body, all metal parts) are of the highest quality.
The Chickering piano company was one of the world’s premier piano manufacturers. They are known for using only the finest aged woods and highest level of craftsmanship and design. The years from which this model dates (1920s-1930s) were some of the finest in the Chickering history. Unfortunately, Chickering pianos are no longer being manufactured today.
